Qian-Dian-Hou-Chang Table
The Qian-Dian-Hou-Chang Table is a wooden furniture piece completed in 2025 by Zigeng Wang, founder and principal architect of PILLS. Taking the traditional self-employed workspace model of Qian-Dian-Hou-Chang as its point of departure, the work integrates the two fundamental functions of display and production into a foldable and portable furniture volume. Transitioning between folded and unfolded states, each configuration corresponds to different working and display interfaces, forming a highly integrated, personal creative space. - Mobile Contemporary Wunderkammer This piece was created by PILLS for the group exhibition "X Lab Series: The Room of Wonders," co-presented by X Museum and Taikoo Li Qiantan, and exhibited at The Pool by X Museum. The exhibition opened on August 22, 2025, with the "Wunderkammer" as its curatorial thread. Originating in private collections during the Renaissance, the Wunderkammer’s unique value lay in constructing distinct display logic and aesthetic order through systematic collection and classification. It not only left a deep imprint on the history of furniture design but also provided crucial reference for the evolution of multifunctional furniture and the display mechanisms of modern art museums. Within this context, the " Qian-Dian-Hou-Chang " Table is regarded as a mobile contemporary Wunderkammer, its conception echoing Marcel Duchamp's Boîte-en-valise — artistic practice condensed into a portable container, freeing creation from the constraints of a fixed space, continuously activated, reconfigured, and re-presented through opening, closing, and movement. - All Worlds, Contained in a Box Centered on the "all in one" concept, the design integrates the dual interfaces of display and production within a single structure. The "Front-Stage, Back-Stage" Table begins as a folded box; through opening, unfolding, and transformation, it progressively activates different levels of functional space within. Folded, it resembles a suitcase—closed and introverted. When unfolded, the "front-stage" emerges as a display interface, while the "back-stage" transforms into actual work surfaces and storage systems. Within this "space-within-space" structure, each surface holds potential multiple identities. The exterior of the box serves both as a protective shell and as a display surface when unfolded. Internal blocks, through pulling and flipping, are redefined as work surfaces, storage compartments, or additional display interfaces. This mobile structure imbues the piece with a powerful metaphor—it is simultaneously a piece of furniture, a room that can be relocated at any time, and even a temporary, miniature architecture. It carries everything an artist needs for their work, becoming "an epitome of an art producer's life."
